The skin is our biggest organ, and it is quite sensitive to our food. Improving skin health requires an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. Having a condition that makes you feel ugly is something that causes you to do whatever you can to hide from everyone.

A diverse diet is also great for your gut health which in turn helps drive the overall health of your skin.

There are several common autoimmune diseases that affect the skin. These include vitiligo, scleroderma, lupus, psoriasis and vasculitis. Autoimmune skin diseases can impact your life in many ways. It affects the way you feel about yourself, the clothes you choose to wear, the way you manage symptoms and the way you care for your overall health. The itch and appearance of skin disorders may get in the way of your life, whether you're at work or school, pregnant, or in a romantic relationship.

Findings from a 2015 research study demonstrated that autoimmune skin disord is highly stigmatizing, and carries about the same level of stigma as herpes. Many of the study participants believed the disorders were infectious and contagious. Autoimmune skin disorders are neither infectious nor contagious is important to note.

Four people opened up about living with autoimmune skin disorders and treating or managing them from inside out.

Janice Ferguson - Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated systemic illness that causes raised patches or plaques on the skin. It affects around 8 million individuals. Up to 30% of the people develop psoriatic arthritis. According to studies, women with psoriatic arthritis have lower patient-reported outcomes for pain, swollen joint count, therapy responses, and remission.

“I was first diagnosed when I was 12 years old,” said Janice. “But the patches were very small and hidden underneath my hair at the base of my scalp. When I was in my early 20s, the patches got worse—so bad that I used to shave the back of my head to air it out.”

“It took a while to be comfortable in my own skin. Not only was I overweight, my skin is so bad I would hide when photos were being taken. I knew I needed to change something to make it go away.”

“Many people think that psoriasis is ‘just a skin thing.’ Psoriasis isn't just an external disease, it’s an autoimmune disease that starts from the inside our bodies. We can’t just put a lotion or topical medication on our skin and consider ourselves healed, even if goes away visually for a period. We have to treat the source inside our bodies,” said Janice.

“When I went on an anti-inflammatory diet to lose weight, I found that my change in diet made a remarkably positive impact on my psoriasis! I now firmly believe that what you eat and drink definitely does impact psoriasis. I started using The Anti-Inflammatory Meal Plan for Beginners and I not only lost the weight I wanted to lose, but my skin definitely cleared up”

Stuart Lagguenstein - Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a skin ailment that creates dry, itchy spots on the body. Because it is frequently caused by inflammation in the body, consuming foods that do not produce inflammation may help minimize symptoms.

“Since I was a baby, eczema has caused my skin to break out in a bright red rash. I had a few happy years in my late teens when my symptoms went away and I assumed I'd outgrown eczema, as do at least 80% of youngsters with the illness,” revealed Stuart.

“It reappeared with a fury a few years later. A scaly rash covered my face, and my eyelids swelled to the point of crusting shut. That's when my eczema began to seriously affect my self-esteem and take a toll on my mental health. Living with eczema is a rollercoaster ride. There are moments when my skin is so clear and itch-free that I forget about the condition altogether.”

“My experiments with every treatment on the market, including elimination diets, lotions and creams, acupuncture, weekly injections, supplements, and immune suppressants, have taught me one thing, though: There’s no one “right” way to treat eczema. In my personal experience, the meals from the Anti-Inflammatory Meal Plan for Beginners does wonders to my skin and overall health.”

“It’s taken a long time to make peace with the chronic nature of the disease and develop strategies to reduce its impact on my physical and emotional well-being. But living with eczema for this long has taught me some important lessons about the disease and life itself. It has taught me how what I put inside my body truly reflects my skin condition, too.”

Juliana Reese - Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term condition where pale white patches develop on the skin. It's caused by the lack of melanin, which is the pigment in skin. Vitiligo can affect any area of skin, but it commonly happens on the face, neck and hands, and in skin creases.

“While vitiligo isn't dangerous or life-threatening, it may drastically alter your life,” said Juliana. “I had to deal with the physical symptoms, but I had to deal with the emotional and psychological effects. As a young person, I didnt have the maturity to really tackle it head on so I did what many of my peers with low self-esteem did and I tried to become invisible. It was basically impossible, of course. My skin was a beacon for bullying.”

“When I started my lifestyle changes on my early twenties, I started feeling a lot better. My new anti-inflammatory diet helped with the symptoms. I started seeking counseling and finding in-person and online communities. Suddenly, I wasn’t so alone anymore.”

“I read a study about how vitiligo showed significant levels of repigmentation when patients ate foods high in antioxidants. A nutrient-dense diet is always advisable, not only for vitiligo but for optimum health.”

“I protect myself against this stress on a cellular level by eating a diet high in antioxidants. I use the Anti-Inflmmatory Meal Plan for Beginner by Arya Soleil and it’s almost miraculous. I love that the recipes are easy to follow and guaranteed delicious. I noticed that all their meals are rich in antioxidants, low in inflammatory foods and possibly also gluten-free, has had a beneficial effect on my vitiligo.”

Pauline Guillermo- Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an uncommon condition that results in hard, thickened areas of skin and sometimes problems with internal organs and blood vessels. Scleroderma is caused by the immune system attacking the connective tissue under the skin and around internal organs and blood vessels.

“It all started when my fingers got exceedingly stiff and swollen with glossy tight skin when I was 24 years old. My entire body and face's skin got exceedingly tight, itchy, and painful. Because of the stiffness, I couldn't stretch my arms or legs. My fingers and toes also went blue with the least temperature fluctuation, and I was constantly chilly,” said Pauline. “Joint and muscular discomfort, persistent weariness and exhaustion, and trouble opening my lips accompanied this. I had the appropriate particular antibody that indicates scleroderma, according to a specialized blood test.”

“It is very scary to find out you have scleroderma. There is a very real chance of organ failure and I can just die with internal injuries,” she confesses.

“For the next seven years, I took every immunosuppressant and disease-modifying drug available. Fortunately for me, my body reacted to the last possible therapeutic option before I needed a stem cell transplant.”

“Fatigue is very common in Scleroderma. For us with Scleroderma, doing our daily housework or putting in a full day at work is exhausting. By the end of the day I barely have enough energy left over for spending time with your family, for enjoying hobbies and activities, and for exercising,”

“My skin, neuromusculoskeletal system, and gastrointestinal tract have all suffered the most damage.

To deal with these problems, I have a regular regimen in place. This involves following a strict diet in order to reduce my gastrointestinal issues. Scleroderma can interfere with digestion and food absorption, resulting in significant weight loss and a general sensation of weakness. I got The Anti-Inflmmatory Meal Plan for Beginners  in December 2021 and have been following their recipes every day since, resulting in a significant improvement in my symptoms.”

Certain lifestyle choices might actually contribute to inflammation. Consuming a high-sugar, refined-carbohydrate diet, processed foods, packaged foods, alcohol, poor sleep quality, and insufficient exercise are all linked to increased inflammation in the body.
